The same-chain rule
If both assets already live on the network where you need them, swap. If your value sits on chain A but you need it on chain B, bridge (or bridge then swap on arrival). Symbols can match — USDC on Ethereum is not the same ledger entry as USDC on Base.
GaurdWallet labels modes explicitly: Exchange → Swap vs Bridge. Pick wrong and the UI may not quote, or worse, you misunderstand a multi-hop route.
When in doubt, ask: “Could I send this token to the destination with a normal transfer if I already had it there?” If yes, you might only need a swap on that chain — not a bridge from elsewhere.
Memecoin buyers on Solana often only need Swap — they already hold SOL on Solana. Ethereum natives buying Solana memes must first solve funding Solana outside Exchange v0.2.1 cross-chain limits.

Common scenarios
Walk through the list below before opening Exchange. Each item maps to a real question users type into search — when to bridge crypto usually means “my money is on the wrong chain,” not “I want a different token on the chain I already use.”
- Same-chain trade (EVM) Example: ETH → USDC on Arbitrum. Use Swap. Set slippage, watch price impact — price impact vs slippage.
- Move to an L2 for cheaper gas Example: ETH on Ethereum mainnet → ETH on Base. Use Bridge. Expect minutes and two-sided fees — Ethereum to Base bridge.
- USDC on wrong EVM chain Example: USDC Polygon → USDC Optimism. Use Bridge — bridge USDC across EVM.
- Buy a memecoin on Solana Fund SOL on Solana, then Swap SOL → token via Jupiter. No EVM bridge inside Exchange for this release.
- Need USDC on Base but only have ETH on Arbitrum Often one LI.FI quote with swap + bridge legs. Read route tools; may be one confirm flow — how LI.FI works.
- Rebalance two tokens on same Solana wallet Swap only. Cross-chain exit requires unsupported bridge paths today.
- Deposit from exchange to wrong EVM chain If tokens already arrived on chain X, swap or bridge from X — do not assume Exchange can pull from an exchange account.
Unsupported cases in v0.2.1
Be explicit so you do not lose funds to wrong tooling. Search engines still surface “bridge BTC in one click” landing pages that have nothing to do with GaurdWallet. If Exchange does not list an asset pair or mode, the honest answer is: use another workflow you research independently — never paste your seed into a helper bot.
- Bitcoin, Litecoin, TRON bridges — not in GaurdWallet Exchange. Use native send workflows appropriate to those chains, not a fake “bridge” tab.
- Solana ↔ EVM — not inside Exchange. Moving requires external services you research separately; never paste seeds into them.
- Cross-chain from Solana — Jupiter path is same-chain swap only — Jupiter Solana swaps.
Trying to force unsupported paths through custom RPC tricks or manual contract calls bypasses Exchange safety rails — and voids the assumptions in these guides.
If your workflow requires unsupported rails, fund a supported chain first using methods you trust (CEX withdrawal to correct network, on-ramp, or peer transfer), then use Exchange only inside supported paths.
Exchange withdrawals vs in-wallet swap
Centralized exchanges ask which network to withdraw on — that choice is your first “bridge or not” decision. Withdrawing USDC on Base directly avoids bridging from Ethereum later. Withdrawing on the wrong network can strand tokens in a wallet that cannot reach your target dApp without an supported bridge path.
GaurdWallet Exchange cannot undo a withdrawal network mistake from a CEX. Fix it with supported bridges or another withdrawal — not by sharing seeds with “recovery services.”
Label CEX accounts with the network you intend to use in self-custody — “Base USDC savings” vs “Ethereum USDC” — to reduce wrong-network withdrawals before Exchange ever opens.
Multi-step plans
Real users chain actions: bridge USDC to Base, then swap to a long-tail token on Base. Each step gets its own quote and expiry window. Wait for bridge completion before swapping on destination — Dashboard status cards exist for this reason. Do not fire duplicate bridges — why swap quotes expire.
If a dApp asks for “USDC on Base” but you only hold USDC on Polygon, your plan is bridge first, swap second — not the reverse. If a dApp asks for ETH on Arbitrum but you hold ETH on Ethereum L1, bridge to Arbitrum before any token-to-token swap on Arbitrum unless a single LI.FI quote already bundles both legs.
Document each step’s transaction hash in a notes app while learning. When something stalls, support forums ask for hashes — not seed phrases.
Costs and time tradeoffs
Swaps are faster; bridges add relayer latency. Sometimes bridging stablecoins and swapping on a cheap L2 beats multiple L1 swaps. Numbers change with gas markets — gas fees swap & bridge.
Time-sensitive trades (airdrops, liquidation avoidance) may favor staying on one chain and swapping only. Moving chains first adds bridge variance — plan hours, not seconds, for large bridge amounts.

dApp deposits and network labels
DeFi apps display required networks prominently — “Base only” means your wallet must hold assets on Base, not Ethereum L1. If you only have L1 USDC, bridge to Base before interacting. If the app accepts multiple EVM chains, pick the one with lowest fees you are comfortable using and bridge there once.
NFT marketplaces and gaming wallets follow the same rule: read the chain badge, then choose Swap vs Bridge in GaurdWallet accordingly. Never assume a token symbol alone implies the correct chain.
When a dApp offers “deposit from any chain,” it usually runs its own bridge backend — outside GaurdWallet Exchange. Compare fees and trust models before routing funds through unknown widgets.
